European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
